Is Grounding Good For You

Let's figure it out

Now when I first heard about grounding I thought it was a bunch of crap

But usually if I am skeptical regarding a health claim I like to try it for a while and see how I feel.

My wife thought I was crazy when I was walking barefoot and hugging trees in the backyard but I am beyond caring what people think about me.  (even my wife) 🙂

With that being said, I don’t have a crazy testimonial regarding my grounding experience but after researching “grounding” there have been plenty of people who have healed from it.

Paula, 36, struggled with insomnia for years. After grounding for 20 minutes daily, she now sleeps deeply and wakes up refreshed.

Jared, 29, an athlete, experienced less muscle stiffness when incorporating grounding into his post-game recovery.

Meera, 44, describes grounding as the "missing ingredient" in her battle against chronic fatigue, reporting a newfound zest for life.

If you have read this far and still wondering:

What is Grounding? And How Can it Help Me?

Here you go!

At its core, grounding involves direct contact with the Earth—walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand, hugging a tree, or even using grounding tools indoors (although skeptical about this).

Humans traditionally had perpetual contact with the Earth (now 99% of us don’t).

What does this matter for your health?

The answer lies in the Earth's electrical charge. The Earth’s surface is rich in free electrons, which act as antioxidants—neutralizing free radicals in the human body, reducing inflammation, and restoring equilibrium.

Here’s how grounding interacts with the body:

  • Transfer of electrons: When your skin makes direct contact with the Earth, electrons flow freely, counteracting harmful electrical charges (free radicals) in your cells.

  • Regulation of cortisol: Studies suggest grounding may help regulate cortisol, the stress hormone, leading to improved mood and energy levels.

  • Heart rate variability: Grounding has been linked to improving heart rate variability, an essential measure of the parasympathetic nervous system’s health.

There are so many studies around grounding that I could write a novel about it so instead of that here is the link to them if you dare to read them all!

While research continues to expand, the potential of grounding cannot be overlooked.

Ways to Practice Grounding (very simple)

Anyone can do it, and it doesn’t require fancy equipment or hours of your day!

Outdoor Grounding

  • Go barefoot: Walk on natural surfaces like grass, soil, sand, or rock.

  • Garden without gloves: Working with plants and soil connects your body to the Earth's electrical field.

  • Swim in natural waters: Lakes, rivers, and oceans offer a full-body grounding experience.

  • Outdoor yoga: Practice yoga or meditation on a natural surface to combine mindfulness with grounding. (love this one)

Indoor Grounding (no promises on this but some people swear by it)

If heading outdoors isn’t an option, modern grounding tools fill the gap:

  • Grounding mats can be placed at your feet while working or sleeping.

  • Grounding sheets are embedded with conductive material to help you stay grounded overnight.

  • Wear grounding jewelry like bracelets designed to transfer electrical charges.

Make it a routine

Consistency is key. Set aside 15–30 minutes daily for grounding to start noticing its effects. Whether it’s a quick walk in your backyard or meditating on a grounding mat, make it a mindful part of your day.

Whenever I talk about a health hack or trend - I think to myself - does this make sense? Is it practical?  And to me - this passes the bullshit test in my book!  So I don’t think that grounding is just a fleeting wellness trend; it’s a time-tested practice supported by modern science and centuries of human tradition. By creating a connection with the Earth, we can combat stress, sleep better, reduce inflammation, and reconnect with ourselves.

Start small—kick off your shoes, head to your backyard, or try a grounding mat—and see how you feel.  Report back to me and let me know how it goes!

Have a great day!
