Morning Habits That Are Secretly Hurting Your Health
Your 5 minute guide to staying healthy
Good morning! ☀️We all have morning routines—some intentional, some automatic, some good and some bad. I typically listen to affirmations and sit in front of my red light panel for 10 minutes, eat a healthy breakfast (Greek yogurt with fruit) and then take my dogs for a walk.
What is your morning routine? (reply to this email)
Are your morning habits secretly sabotaging your health? From checking our phones to hitting the snooze button, today I will be uncovering the surprising morning routines that could be holding you back from optimal wellness.
Here’s what to watch out for and some tips to replace it:
1. Hitting Snooze Repeatedly
That extra 10 minutes of fragmented sleep can leave you groggier than if you’d just gotten up, thanks to sleep inertia - a state of grogginess that slows cognitive function, reaction times, and mood. Worse, it disrupts your natural sleep cycle, making it harder to wake up over time.
Fix: Place your alarm across the room to force yourself out of bed, or try a sunrise alarm clock for a gentler wake-up.
2. Checking Your Phone Immediately
Scrolling through emails or social media first thing spikes cortisol (your stress hormone) and sets a reactive tone for the day. Spending too much time on your phone in the morning diverts your focus from meaningful tasks and mindfulness. Instead of preparing for the day ahead, you risk falling into an unproductive cycle of comparison and distraction.
Fix: Wait at least 30 minutes before screen time. Try stretching, hydrating, or journaling instead. Another option is to use a Digital Wellness App like Forest or Freedom help you create time blocks to avoid socially draining distractions.
3. Skipping Sunlight Exposure
Morning sunlight stimulates cortisol production, which helps you feel alert and energized naturally (unlike caffeine, which disrupts it). This sets a healthy sleep-wake cycle, making it easier to wake up and fall asleep later. Sunlight also triggers serotonin (the "feel-good" hormone), reducing anxiety and depression risk.
Fix: Step outside for 5–10 minutes within an hour of waking—even on cloudy days! Or go for a walk!
4. Drinking Coffee Too Early
Cortisol, the "wake-up hormone," peaks shortly after you wake up (typically between 6–9 AM). Coffee consumed during this time competes with cortisol, reducing its natural effectiveness. Caffeine also blocks adenosine (a chemical that makes you sleepy). If taken too early, it might delay your natural sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to wake up naturally over time.
Fix: Wait 90 minutes after waking for your first cup, or opt for decaf/herbal tea first.
5. Skipping Breakfast (or Eating Processed Foods)
In general, our bodies are more sensitive to insulin in the morning compared to later in the day. This means that our cells are better able to absorb and utilize glucose (sugar) from the foods we eat in the morning. Skipping breakfast may slow metabolism and reduce focus, while cereals or pastries cause energy crashes.
Fix: Eat protein, healthy carbs + fiber (eggs, Greek yogurt, fruit, homemade oats) to stabilize blood sugar.
6. Rushing Through Your Morning
A frantic start triggers stress responses that linger all day. Rushing activates the fight-or-flight response, flooding your body with cortisol and adrenaline. This can leave you feeling anxious, irritable, or drained by mid-morning. A frantic start overwhelms the brain, reducing working memory and decision-making skills. You’re more likely to forget things (keys, tasks, etc.) and make mistakes.
Fix: Wake up 15 minutes earlier to ease into the day—meditate, breathe, or do a light yoga routine.
The Bottom Line
Small tweaks to your morning can lead to better energy, mood, and set you up for a successful day! Try adjusting one habit at a time and notice the difference.
