One Thing You Should Never Do

Stop Comparing, Start Thriving

When it comes to your health, I will offer a piece of advice every middle-aged man or woman should take to heart: stop comparing yourself to others.

This was what I used to do in my 20’s but soon realized that it got me nowhere!

It’s so easy to look at a younger coworker who seems to breeze through workouts or a social media post with picture-perfect six-pack abs and think, “Why can’t I do that?” But here’s the truth—comparing yourself to others is one of the most harmful habits you can adopt for your health. Truthfully, every health and wellness journey is unique.

Why comparisons can cause more harm than good:

  • It leads to unrealistic expectations: Your body is different from everyone else’s. What works for someone else—whether it’s a specific diet, intense workout, or trendy health fad—might not work for you. And that’s OK.

  • It can kill motivation: When you don’t see “instant results” like someone else might, it’s easy to feel discouraged. This mindset could derail any progress you’ve worked hard for.

  • It ignores what’s truly important: Your ultimate goal should be about feeling good, improving energy levels, and enhancing your quality of life—not matching someone else’s appearance or habits.

My solution? Listen to your body!!

Instead of focusing outward, pay attention to how you feel.

  • Do certain meals leave you feeling energized, or sluggish?

  • How are your bowel movements? Do you have bloating and/or gas?

  • Are morning walks giving you more mental clarity than the intense cardio you’ve been forcing yourself to do?

By focusing on what truly works for you, you’ll build a healthier, sustainable lifestyle that aligns with your individual needs.

Recently I was supposed to do Friday leg workout but just wasn't feeling right physically (probably because I didn't get a great night sleep) and easily could have forced it.  But I decided to take an off day and pushed my workout to Saturday when I felt more energy because I slept better.  As much as I like to stick with my routine, sometimes you have to pivot when things don't feel right.

Start Here:

  1. Identify one area of your health where you’ve been struggling (e.g., energy levels or stress).

  2. Replace comparison with curiosity—try new routines to see what fits best. (Going for a daily walk, meditating for 10 minutes) Pick One!

  3. Measure progress based on YOUR goals, not someone else’s success. Consistency wins the day!

At the end of the day, your health is about you. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but each small, consistent improvement gets you closer to living your best life.
