The Silent Epidemic: Leaky Gut
Your five minute guide to staying healthy
When we talk about staying healthy, I think one of the first things we should talk about is a healthy gut! I have had some great conversations with Colin Stuckert, Dr. William Davis and my most recent interview with gastroenterologist - Dr. Farivar!
Today, we’re breaking down leaky gut syndrome—what it is, why it matters, and how to heal your gut for better overall health.
🧐 What Is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut syndrome (or intestinal permeability) occurs when the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, allowing undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria to "leak" into the bloodstream. This can trigger inflammation, immune reactions, and a host of health issues.
Common Signs of Leaky Gut:
- Bloating, gas, diarrhea, or IBS-like symptoms
- Food sensitivities (especially gluten & dairy)
- Chronic fatigue or brain fog
- Skin issues (eczema, acne, rosacea)
- Autoimmune conditions (Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis)
🔬 What Causes Leaky Gut?
Several factors contribute to intestinal permeability:
1. Diet: Excess sugar, processed foods, alcohol, and gluten.
2. Chronic Stress: Raises cortisol, weakening gut lining.
3. Medications: NSAIDs (ibuprofen), antibiotics, and PPIs.
4. Imbalanced Gut Microbiome: Too many bad bacteria, not enough good ones.
5. Environmental Toxins: Pesticides, mold, and heavy metals.
